Max Blair Wins ULMS Return to Freedom Motorsports Park

July 16, 2016
Freedom, NY

The Zimmer’s Service Center ULMS Late Model Series return to Freedom Motorsports Park in Delevan, NY for the first super late model event at the track since the series last event in 2009 at the 1/3 mile oval located 45 minutes south of Buffalo.  Max Blair of Centerville, PA picked up his third series win of the year in front of a very fan friendly crowd.

Series point  leader and winner the night before at McKean County Raceway, Dave Hess Jr. and Blair sat on the front row for the 30 lap main event.  The field roared into turn one with the duo side by side and Blair hooking the cushion and falling from second to fourth immediately as Hess scooted away as Bump Hedman and Brent Rhebergen both got by.   Hess immediately started to pull away from the field as Blair went to work on Rhebergen.   Hedman tried to keep the CJ Rayburn by BA machine of Hess within striking distance.  Blair got around Hess for second on a turn four pass and set sight on Hess.

As the laps clicked off quickly by the fast pace, Blair was still chasing Hess while Hedman, Rhebergen and John Volpe were your top five.   Lap 17 would see the first caution of the event for Rhebergen who slowed on the front stretch ending his top five run.  The running order was still Hess, Blair, Hedman, Chris Hackett, twelfth starting and local favorite and past track champion Greg Oakes was up to sixth with Damien Bidwell now seventh.  John Volpe went to the pits under the caution with a apparent flat tire while inheriting fourth due to Rhebergen’s stoppage would return as the field restarted the event.

The last thirteen laps went non stop with Hess and Blair working lap traffic turning lap times in low 15 second range.  Blair would start to cut into Hess’s lead kicking off consecutive two tenth of second laps faster than Hess as both drivers were rim riding the big cushion.  As Hess and Blair maneuvered around lap traffic with two to go, the duo split lap car of Jason Dobson with Hess hooking the cushion and Blair rocketing by into the lead and pulling away by .430 seconds over Hess who won the night before.  Hedman came home third, with Greg Oakes and Chris Hackett rounding out the top five.  The rest of the top ten were Doug Eck, Bidwell, John Volpe, Nathan Hill and Bobby Rohrer.

ULMS Late Models will return to action on Sunday, July 31st at The Old Bradford Speedway in Rew, PA.  This will be the first visit by the super late models since 2012.
