Max Blair Gets the Nightly Double! Wins both Super Late Models and Crate Late Models!

By Jay Pees

Stateline Speedway followed up a successful opening night with a full night of regular racing that featured 29 Super Late Models with all cars starting in the 25-lap regular length feature. Heat race action was hot and heavy with Max Blair setting a lap to be beat of 15.000 seconds on lap five on his way to a preliminary win.

In feature action Blair completed the "Nightly Double", triumphing in both the super Late Model and Crate Late Model features. In the Super Late Model finale, the younger Blair led every lap, but in the Crate Late Model feature waited until the final turn to get take over the front spot from Scott Gurdak, who had led from the drop of the green.

Max Blair started from the outside front row of the Super Late Model feature and flew to the win over last week's winner Robbie Blair, his father. In the process he lapped half of the 27-car field while building a quarter lap lead at the finish. It was Blair's first ever Super Late Model win at the venerable old speedplant, coming in only his first-ever Super Late Model start here.

Although he was in the pits last week he experienced problems in his heat and did not start the feature. Brent Rhebergen wound up third with David Scott fourth and John Volpe fifth. Only two cautions slowed the event, the first coming on lap three when Dutch Davies suddenly slowed in turn four, then a major eight-car pile-up at the restart when fourth-running Bump Hedman failed to come up to speed and triggered the accordion-style melee.

The closest race of the night was the Crate Late Model feature, which also ran without a caution. Scott Gurdak took the lead at the start from the outside front row over Darrell Bossard. Fourth starting Max Blair went to third at lap two, then got by Bossard for second one lap later.

At halfway Gurdak held about a three car length lead over Blair with Blair seemingly unable to close the gap until about five laps to go, then closing in and drawing even as the cars went down the back straight before falling back behind Gurdak at the end of seventeen.

Coming through turn three on lap nineteen Blair again drew alongside but at the white flag Gurdak was again a length in front. On turn two of the final lap Blair yet again drew even but Gurdak held on until turn three when he went slightly wide, hung up behind a lapped car, allowing the young speedster to get under and complete the pass, then go on to the win.
